ELY TAKE TWO NATIONAL TITLES

Ely played in four categories at the National Roller Hockey Championships. A clash with the world cup final reduced entries but nevertheless some of the top clubs were present.

All the teams played well but it was the ladies and under 15s who came away with the titles although the under 13s lost our on goal difference.

under 11s and ladies both lose cup finals

Ely played in two finals in the Eastern Counties Cup finals day. First to play were the under 11s who had won the league so were going for the double. The opposition were Kings Lynn who had finished the season strongly, so were going to be difficult to beat. Unfortunately this was made harder by Ely being down to only 3 outfielders and a stand in goalie as Molly Williams was still recovering from here broken arm. Ely however still put up a brave performance scoring twice in an 8 – 2 defeat.

Under 13s fail to make EC cup finals

The  under 13s were in action in the qualifiers for the Eastern Counties Cups with their first match against Norwich. Ely could have been in a commanding lead but for the lack of passing in front of goal and an excellent display by the Norwich keeper. Ely did eventually take the lead but this wasn’t ever enough with the match drawn 1 -1 .

under 15s edged out on goal difference

Ely’s under 15s played in the Eastern Counties cup qualifiers. The competition involved 2 groups and Ely were pitted against League Champions Kings Lynn and Bury in their group.

under 11s title and under 13s

Ely won their second trophy of the season without playing a match at the last under 11s tournament. As Ely had completed their fixtures their eyes were on the results especially from local rivals Cambridge who with 4 wins could have tied for the championship and forced a playoff. In the end Cambridge could only manage one win, 2 draws and a loss allowing Ely to celebrate an unlikely success at the beginning of the season given several players were new to the game. Kings Lynn piped Cambridge for second.

under 13s Blues and under 15s

Ely under 15s played their last tournament of the season. With their regular goalkeeper unable to play James Walsh stepped in and put in an excellent performance in hi s first ever 1st Division tournament.

The Jubilee cup is the most prestigious under 13s tournament of the roller hockey calendar. This year’s event was held on one day at Soham and there were 7 entries. Ely were the only club with two teams, The Greens a mainly boys team although Hattie Ford played in goal replacing the regular goalie still stuck in the USA. The Blues was an all girls team the only one in the competition.

under 11's title in the balance

Ely played their final two tournaments of the season in quick succession. The team have led the table for the whole season so it was important to get some good results as they don’t take part in the final round of matches.

Under 17s league season ends

Eastern Counties Under 17s League

Ely hosted the last tournament of their season at Soham. All the players present can play at this age group next year, so the team were looking for good performances as they were unlikely to improve on 5th place in the league this year.
