injuries take toll for Elys senior A side

Elys Senior A team finished the year with their home tournament at Soham. The day started with a tricky tie against Letchworth who have a couple of skilful players. Ely started slowly and it was the opposition who took the lead which was soon doubled. Ely pulled one back but went into the break 2 – 1 down. After the break Ely picked up the pace and scored 3 well taken goals to take a 2 goal lead. Some slack defending gave Letchworth their 3rd which wasn’t enough as Ely won 4 – 3 (scorers Max Dunand 2, Michael Hart and Hannah Barrow).

Game 2 against Whittlesey saw Ely much more organised. With instructions to push in the opposition half Ely created numerous chances and were rarely threatened in defence. Player of the game Hart scored 2 with a goal each for Dunand and Dan Salisbury.

The next game started like several other this season as Ely went one down to Colchester. A well taken Dunand goal put them level and an own goal gave Ely the lead. They couldn’t hang on with Colchester finding a late equaliser.

The last game against league leaders Norwich saw Ely playing their 4th game of the day against the oppositions 3rd. This proved decisive as Ely looked tired. Salisbury suffering from an earlier injury was joined by Sam Arnold leaving only 4 ‘fit’ players’. Whilst the chances at both ends were even Norwich hit some superb slapshots and took a 5 goal lead at half time. Ely had to take chances in the 2nd half and pulled an early goal back. However  Norwich always had the extra pace and the score ended 10 – 3 (Salisbury, Dunand and Arnold)

Ely lie third in the table with games in hand over Colchester but Norwich despite dropping a point to Letchworth are firm favourites for the title.
