under 15s edged out on goal difference

Ely’s under 15s played in the Eastern Counties cup qualifiers. The competition involved 2 groups and Ely were pitted against League Champions Kings Lynn and Bury in their group.

Ely were caught out early in the game against Lynn going 2 – 0 down inside the first minute. They then settled better but still gave the opposition too many chances and poor defending cost them dear. A goal by Simon Thompson was all they had to show from the first half which ended 6 – 1.

In the second half Ely started brightly and pulled another goal back from Max Dunnand and started to play their best hockey. Another goal by Thompson kept the score respectable but in the end Lynn won 12 – 3.

In the second game against Bury, Ely started the best but a couple of long range shots found the net and Ely were 2 – 0 down. The game then became very even with goals from Hannah Barrow and Dunnand making it 3 – 2 at half time. In the second half Ely looked the best team but it was Bury who scored again. Further goals from Dunnand and Barrow brought Ely back on terms only for Bury to regain their lead. Barrow then completed her hat trick to leave a tense last few minutes. With 10 seconds on the clock Thompson broke for goal but a good save from the Bury keeper was enough for a 5 – 5 draw.

Ely then had to wait for the Kings Lynn V Bury game but Bury managed to keep the score to 8 – 1 and edged Ely on goal difference.
