under 11s title and under 13s
Ely won their second trophy of the season without playing a match at the last under 11s tournament. As Ely had completed their fixtures their eyes were on the results especially from local rivals Cambridge who with 4 wins could have tied for the championship and forced a playoff. In the end Cambridge could only manage one win, 2 draws and a loss allowing Ely to celebrate an unlikely success at the beginning of the season given several players were new to the game. Kings Lynn piped Cambridge for second.
Both under 13s teams were in action at their last tournament at Soham. With two players missing the Greens called up Elliot Gordon from the under 11s and played without subs. Their first match was against Norwich, always a close fought affair but this time it was the visitors who won 5 – 3 despite a hat trick from Hattie Ford.
Meanwhile the Blues started against champions Bury. They played well in phases but were caught out several times and lost 12 – 1 (scorer Ryan Norton).
The match of the day was the two Ely teams pitted against each other. Both were determined not to lose and there was some great play from all players. Some great goalkeeping from stand in goalie Kirsty Moffat was a key factor for the blues plus 4 well taken goals. The Greens were restricted to a lone goal (scorers Emily Barrow 2, Nikki Hart, Vicky Moffat and Jake Kendall).
The Blues on a high from their first win let Norwich take too many chances early on and found themselves 5 – 1 down at half time. However, in the second half they played fantastically, only to go down 6 – 5 (goals Norton 3, Barrow and Hart).
The Greens game against Cottenham became very difficult as the heat and lack of subs took its toll. What is normally a tight game turned into an easy win for Cottenham who had 3 subs enabling them to rotate regularly , final score 12 – 4.
