TEN ELY PLAYERS REPRESENT EASTERN COUNTIES (& THE NORTH!)
Ten Ely players represented Eastern Counties in the 2010 Inter Regional Championships.
In the Under 11s Ryan Norton was part of the victorious under Eastern 1 11s team following an excellent team performance. The day started with a 15 – 0 win over the Eastern 2 team, then a hard fought 8 – 4 win over the South and an easier 16 – 2 victory over the North with Ryan scoring several times. Archie Salmon was part of the younger and more inexperienced Eastern 2 team who lost 15 – 0 to the South but managed an excellent 4 – 4 with the North.
Heather Dunnand, Nikki Hart and Emily Barrow teamed up for E2 in the U 13s. Their first match against favourites E1 started well, with the score at 1 - 0 well into the first half. However the oppositions strength soon told and the game ended 10 – 0 a score that didn’t seem so bad given E1 put 11, 16 & 19 goals past the other teams. E2 other games were all close affairs firstly losing 4 – 2 against last years champions S1. Then followed 2 of the best games, coming back from 3 – 0 down to S2 to 3 – 3 only to lose 4 – 3 and then a thriller against the North. With the game at 5 - 5 and 30 seconds left Barrow converted a good cross for a deserved victory.
In the U15s Max Dunnand was part of a strong E1 squad, although they didn’t have their own way against E2 (inc Hannah Barrow and Hattie Ford) with the scores poised 1 – 1 at half time. However, the game swung early in the 2nd half, with E1 winning 7 – 1. Their other games were more comfortable 9 – 0 v S & 11 – 0 v N. Meanwhile E2 played well in a 7 – 3 win v N & a 3 -3 v S, results which ensured Eastern a 1 – 2 in the tournament.
The U17s had no Southern team. Jake Haynes and Dan Salisbury were in E2 who found the going tough against two strong sides. They defended well against E1 whose whole team are in the current England Squad. However experience eventually told with E1 winning 8 – 0. The game against N was a thriller but E2 lost out 7 – 5.
One of the surprises of the weekend was in the Ladies. This was a ‘2 horse race’ between the North and East with the East containing several England players. No Ely girls were picked for the East but as the North were short Ford and Barrow stepped in. The Ely girls made a difference with Ford scoring 3 in a comfortable 5 - 1 victory.
