under 11's title in the balance
Ely played their final two tournaments of the season in quick succession. The team have led the table for the whole season so it was important to get some good results as they don’t take part in the final round of matches.
At the first tournament at Burwell Ely achieved a 100% record with good wins over Cottenham 10 – 4 and Letchworth 3 -0 and a close fought 6 -5 over Kings Lynn A.
In the final tournament hosted by Kings Lyyn Ely made a very strong start defeating King's Lynn B 9 - 0 with goals from Heather Dunand (6) and Ryan Norton (3).
The next match versus Kings Lynn ‘A’ proved much more difficult but after going two nil down Norton scored two goals to level the game at half time. In the second half however Kings Lynn came back strongly and despite heroics in the Ely goal by Molly Williams and strong defending by Elliot Gordon and Ryan Jackson, Lynn were able to score the only three goals of the half for a 5 -2 win and Ely’s first defeat of the season.
The next game was against fellow title contenders and local rivals Cambridge. The first half finished 2 - 1 to Ely with Norton scoring both goals. In the second half Ely surged to a 4 - 2 lead with a further goal from Norton and one from Dunand. As the game went on however Cambridge started to apply the pressure and despite a penalty save by Williams they were able to level the game at 4:4 with five minutes to go. In a tense finish the game could have gone either way but with one minute to go Cambridge scored the winner.
The final game was a strong 9:0 win over Chesterton with everyone contributing to a fine performance to end the season. The goals again came from Dunand and Norton with Archie Salmon making a good contribution to Ely's attacking play.
Ely’s final record consists of 15 wins, a draw and 2 losses. Kings Lynn A with 3 losses cant catch Ely but Cambridge with a draw and two losses can if they win all their matches at the last tournament. Their final match is against the fast improving Kings Lynn so Ely will be supporting their Norfolk rivals. If Cambridge do win there will be a tie and league is decided on matches between the two clubs, but with a win each and a draw they still wont be split so a play off would be required.
