Ely Blues played their latest matches in the second division of the Eastern Counties League. This league has had some of the closest matches and the Burwell tournament had plenty of goals in some tightly fought contests.

In match 1 Ely faced Colchester. Past results were one apiece so it was no surprise that there was never more than one goal separating the teams well into the second half. With Colchester 4 – 3 up and Ely pressing for an equaliser two successive blue cards meant Ely played much of the latter stages with only 3 players. This allowed Colchester to press home the advantage and win 5 -3 (scorers Paul Masterton, Steph Collier & Jake Kendall).

Match 2 continued in the same vein with an early Ely goal being cancelled out by Norwich who then took a 3 – 2 lead. Again a blue card for Ely handed Norwich the initiative and a 4 – 2 lead at half time. Soon after the break Norwich extended their lead but then followed some excellent Ely goals pulling the scores back level. Jake Kendalls 3rd goal gave Ely a slim lead and despite a fourth blue card they held on for a 6 – 5 win (other scorers Collier and Jordon Chambers 2).

In the final game Ely faced Letchworth who have a couple of strong players who always find plenty of goals. Letchworth took an early 2 goal lead but Ely fought back to level things 3 -3 only for Letchworth to regain the 2 goal lead. Another Ely goal gave the team hope but a decisive period of play early in the second half gave the opposition a 4 goal margin. Ely played well in the final stages but despite a couple of good goals never got back into the game and lost 9 – 7. (scorers Masterton 3, Kendall 2 & Collier 2).
